BREAKTHROUGH: The World’s First Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Superyacht
Marking a new chapter in sustainable innovation, Breakthrough is the first superyacht in the world to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells, an ambitious milestone for both Feadship and the industry at large. Also known as Project 821, this steel and aluminum vessel is the largest yacht ever built by Feadship and the first in the yard’s fleet to utilize a pure green hydrogen fuel source. It represents a major step forward in Feadship’s commitment to delivering “net-zero” yachts by 2030.
One of the most significant engineering challenges in Breakthrough’s development was the safe storage of liquid hydrogen at -253°C. To overcome this, Feadship integrated a double-walled cryogenic tank within a dedicated, insulated room—requiring up to ten times the space of a diesel equivalent. The tank holds 92 square meters of hydrogen and, when combined with the yacht’s switchboard-connected DC electrical grid and vapor venting system, added four meters to her original specifications.
The yacht’s fuel cell system is also capable of running on methanol, a more storage-friendly alternative, which is reformed into hydrogen before entering the cell. While Breakthrough cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen for transoceanic crossings, her fuel cells are powerful enough to cover hotel loads and deliver a full week of silent, emission-free cruising at 10 knots. For extended voyages, propulsion is supported by MTU generators running on sustainable HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil).
With 543 kWh of stored energy and 3,200 kW ABB pod drives, Breakthrough demonstrates how advanced engineering and clean energy can coexist at the highest level of yachting. She is not only a technical triumph but a symbol of what’s possible in the future of zero-emission luxury vessels.
